Thuongmai University organized a Press Conference to launch Viet Nam Annual Economic and Trade Report 2019: “From Trade War to Currency War” at 8am on June 3rd 2020, in the conference room 1, F building.

Attending the conference, there were A/Prof. Dr. Do Minh Thanh – Party Secretary – Vice Rector; Prof. Dr. Dinh Van Son – Deputy Party Secretary – Rector; A/Prof. Dr. Bui Huu Duc - Chairman of University Council, A/Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hoang – Vice Rector, A/Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Bich Loan – Vice Rector, heads of faculties and departments as well as the authors of the Report 2019.

Viet Nam Annual Economic and Trade Report 2019 is one of scientific products in the Programme of major science and technology in 2018-2025 of Thuongmai University. The Report provides an objective and independent view on domestic and international economic and trade issues. It studies short-term issues in the medium- and long-term vision with the same structure: Economic Contexts of the world and Vietnam; Major facets showing macro economy and trade situation; some prominent issues of each year, and issues for 2019 are related to the title “From trade war to currency war”; some implications to develop Vietnam economy and trade for the following year.

Delivering the opening speech, Prof. Dr. Dinh Van Son – University Rector said that following the Report 2018’s success, the Viet Nam Annual Economic and Trade Report 2019 themed “From trade war to currency war” summarized major economic issues in the chaotic 2019 and proposed some policy recommendations.

Viet Nam Annual Economic and Trade Report 2019 “From trade war to currency war” is the second publication in the series of annual reports of Thuongmai University. The Report has 5 main parts: 

Part 1: The world’s economy in 2019: main trends, global economic growth rate, trade and investment, finance and currency, global integration.

Part 2: Vietnam’s economy in 2019: analysis and remarks on Vietnam’s economy in 2019 with some macro variables i.e. growth rate, trade, investment, labour market and fiscal and monetary policies…

Part 3: Vietnam’s trade in 2019: analysis and remarks on the following facets: global trade integration, total retail and service revenues, supply and demand of some necessities, market and trade stakeholders; modes and types of franchise; developing some trade infrastructures, balance of trade, import and export (in terms of commodities and markets), policies of managing and developing im/exports.

Part 4: From trade war to currency war: Pros and Cons of protectionism in the world, deep analysis of protectionism tools, impacts of protectionism on Vietnam’s exportation, especially impacts from US-China trade war.

Part 5: Vietnam’s economy and trade in 2020 forecasts: Outlooks of the world’s economy and Vietnam’s macro economy in 2019; forecast on protectionism trends the world and opportunities and challenges for Vietnam; forecasts and outlooks of Vietnam trade in 2019, some recommendations for 2019 and the upcoming years.

In the Q&A session, A/Prof. Dr. Le Xuan Ba – Former Director of Central Institute on Economic Management – Ministry of Planning and Investment – spoke highly of the research, which was a valuable scientific product thanks to the authors’ enthusiastic investment. However, he made some suggestions so that the report could be more profound with a wider view which helped speed up Vietnam economy.
