Seminar Announcing Vietnam’s Annual Economic and Trade Report 2020: “Investment and Growth amid Covid-19 Pandemic”

At 8 am July 12th, 2021, at H3 Hall, Thuongmai University held a seminar to announce Vietnam’s Annual Economic and Trade Report 2020: “Investment and Growth amid Covid-19 Pandemic”. The report, which is the 3rd report to be released by Thuongmai University, resides to the university’s annually published report series which is aimed to review influential economic and commercial issues and present objective and independent viewpoints of domestic and international economic and commercial issues.
Attending the seminar, on behalf of Thuongmai University there were Prof/A. Dr. Bùi Hữu Đức, Secretary of Party Committee, Chairman of the University’s Council; Prof/A. Dr. Nguyễn Hoàng, Deputy Secretary of Party Committee, President; Prof/A. Dr. Nguyễn Hoàng Việt, Vice President; Prof/A. Dr. Đỗ Minh Thành, Vice President; Prof. Dr. Đinh Văn Sơn, General Editor of Trade Science Review, Chief Editor of the Annual Economic and Trade Report, Former President, and members of the editing group, heads of departments, and the University’s associate professors.
On behalf of the visitors, there were Prof/A. Dr. Đinh Văn Thành, Senior expert with Vietnam Institute of Industrial and Trade Policy and Strategy; Prof/A. Dr. Lê Xuân Bá, Senior expert with Central Institute for Economic Management of Vietnam; Prof/A. Dr. Nguyễn Văn Dần, Dean of Economics Faculty, and representatives of Institute of Finance, Vietnam Television Technology Investment and Development Company, Vietnam Cable Television, Dân Trí online newspaper, Tuổi Trẻ newspaper, Vietnam Business Forum, People’s Public Security online newspaper; VNExpress online newspaper, Thanh Niên online newspaper, etc.
Vietnam’s Annual Economic and Trade Report 2020 focused on investment and growth amid the Covid-19 pandemic on the basis of data and proof selected official and reliable data providers of economic and trade forecast in order to put forward suggestions to Vietnam’s economic and trade development policy for the coming years.
Delivering the opening speech at the seminar, Prof/A. Dr. Nguyễn Hoàng, President of Thuongmai University stated that Vietnam’s Annual Economic and Trade Report 2020 is the research result of the hardworking and enthusiastic authors with the assistance of the board of counselors and review consisting of experienced economists. He also expressed his respect for researchers and partners who had accompanied with the work.

Following the opening session, on behalf of the authors, Prof/A. Dr. Hà Văn Sự, Dean of Faculty of Economics – Law presented the main contents of Vietnam’s Annual Economic and Trade Report 2020 titled “Investment and Growth amid Covid-19 Pandemic”. Accordingly, Prof/A. Dr. Hà Văn Sự raised the issues of Vietnam’s investment and economic development in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic and short-term issues in an overall long-term vision with a consistent structure including Vietnam’s and the world’s economic situation and major aspects reflecting the annual macroeconomic and trade situation for the assessment of development potential of the following years.

Vietnam’s Annual Economic and Trade Report 2020 consists of 4 main sections.
Section 1: The world’s and Vietnam’s economy in 2020 is an overview with highlights of the world’s and Vietnam’s economy amid the outbreak and detrimental influence of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Section 2: Vietnam’s trade in 2020 discusses global trade integration, total service retail and revenue, the demand and supply of several essentials, market and participants, the methods and types of franchise, the development of trade infrastructure, trade balance, goods import and export by types of goods and market, and policy on goods import and export management and development.
Section 3: Vietnam’s investment and growth in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic shows the happenings and impact of the Covid-19 on the world and on Vietnam’s investment and economic and trade growth. Especially, the report analyzes and evaluates Vietnamese government’s measures to attract investment and maintain economic and trade growth rate in 2020.
Section 4: Economic and trade forecast and suggested policy for Vietnam in 2021. Based on the expectations of the Covid-19 pandemic happenings, the trend of protectionism in the world, and the opportunities and challenges facing Vietnam, this section makes economic and trade forecast and suggests policies to be adopted in 2021 and the years to come.
During the discussion session hosted by Prof. Dr. Đinh Văn Sơn, General Director of the Trade Science Review, Chief Editor of the Annual Economic and Trade Report, and former President of the University, researchers and experts highly praised the work by the authors as a valuable and objective scientific research project. Nevertheless, researchers suggested the authors clarify several points of contents and value.

Closing the seminar, Prof/A. Dr. Nguyễn Viết Thái, member of the board of organization of the event summarized valuable suggestions made to the authors and acknowledged the participation and contribution of experts, managers, and researchers for improvement of Vietnam’s Annual Economic and Trade Report 2020.
